Pour cette deuxième année, nous proposons, sur la base des acquis de l'année précédente, de poursuivre l'exploration, en Afrique intertropicale, de deux questions clés : a) quelles furent les contributions respectives du climat et de l'activité anthropique sur les environnements tropicaux observés (végétation, ressources en eau, ...)? b) quelles furent les conséquences des fluctuations de l'environnement sur les sociétés humaines? Ces questions sont abordées en se focalisant sur la période Holocène et dans le contexte morphotectonique et climatique de l'Afrique de l'Est. En effet, cette région fournit des enregistrements climatiques et environnementaux continus pour cette période. Notre reconstitution continue des paléoenvironnements et des paléoclimats s'appuie sur la synthèse des enregistrements sédimentaires régionaux (continentaux et marins) et sur l'acquisition de données paléo-climatiques et environnementales complémentaires sur deux sites de référence, éthiopien et tanzanien. Les données archéologiques, abondantes en Ethiopie-Djibouti, seront replacées au sein de cette reconstitution climatique, et comparées aux données disponibles pour l'Holocène et la période historique dans les autres régions d'Afrique tropicale. La combinaison des marqueurs climatiques, environnementaux et d'activité humaine permettra i) d'établir des marqueurs sédimentaires d'anthropisation, ii) d'observer le synchronisme/asynchonisme éventuel des changements de climat et de sociétés (occupation des sols, explosion et déclin des civilisations, famines historiques, art rupestre, ...), et iii) d'explorer les stratégies adaptatives des populations humaines aux changements de l'environnement.
