First AMMA Summer School : AMMASS/1

The Co-ordination Committee of AMMA (CCMA) is pleased to announce that the first AMMA Summer School (AMMASS/1) will take place at the 'Centre de Recherches Atmosphériques' of Campistrous near Lannemezan, France, September 1-12, 2003.

Eligible candidates must fulfil criteria attached to this announcement. Being involved with at least one of the AMMA theme will be a plus.

The multidisciplinary aspect of the African Monsoon as well as the importance of scale interactions will be emphasised (see preliminary syllabus attached). Linkages with applications such as food security, water management and public health will be highlighted.

Final selection for trainees will be at the end of April/ beginning of May. Please note that you must have a proper health insurance in order to attend AMMASS/1.

After attending the school, it is anticipated that successful trainees will be in a position of developing joint research projects, and participate actively in the AMMA project itself.

Selecting Criteria for AMMASS/1

• Minimal academic experience: university diploma/degree related to at least one of the AMMA theme. Candidates are primarily scientists, or individual involved in applies sectors applications such as food security, public health, water management, early warning systems (EWS).
• Candidates must have knowledge on African climate variability, west African monsoon and its multidisciplinary character.
• Candidates must belong either to research institutions, university, governmental or not agencies.
• Candidate must be familiar with simple statistical tools and techniques. They must be able to work in a PC environment and familiar with database management.
• Good working knowledge of French (English speaking countries) and English (French speaking countries) are required.

Trainees' Application Folder

Complete folder must include a short CV, as well as a letter showing interests in participating in AMMA. Folder may be mailed/E-mailed prior to April 15, 2003.
