This is achieved through short courses, workshops and seminars. An international School will take place at about two years intervals in a different country. The first International MEDIAS School took place in Niamey (Niger) in December 1993, the second one in February 1995 in Nairobi (Kenya), both involving numerous collaborations (CNES, French Ministry of Cooperation, WMO, UNEP, ACMAD, START, etc.). Future Schools and workshops are planned in South Africa, Senegal, Israel, etc. MEDIAS, START and IGBP-DIS (Data and Information System) have agreed to collaborate on DIS training in Africa Dedicated workshops have taken place in Ivory Coast, Tunisia, a Conference on Desertification and Land Degradation in the Mediterranean in under preparation. Didactic tools have been developed throughout (e.g., Africa and Global Change data base) in collaboration with NOAA-NGDC and GDTA, and are distributed within the network.
