News from SCOT Conseil

SCOT Conseil is a subsidiary of CNES (the French Space Agency). One of the main tasks with which it has been entrusted, is to promote the use of data from CNES Earth observation programmes and in particular from SPOT satellites. 1996 starts with two major projects with funding from the European Union:

- a "Mission of evaluation for vegetation and forest cartography" in the SADC zone (South African Development Community) has been entrusted to SCOT Conseil which will assign 3 experts for the period of one year to lay the foundation and propose standards for cartography in the region. The role of SPOT imagery is likely to be a fundamental one.

- the project on " Agricultural statistics in Russia" is aimed at setting up an operational system for forecasting of harvests and agricultural statistics, identical to the one currently being used in Europe for the European Union.

SCOT Conseil, in association with a group led by CRI (Denmark) has been awarded a 3-year framework contract for the seconding of experts to the Ispra Joint Research Centre for work on themes, applications and information related to remote sensing.

The European Space Agency which wants to analyse the suitability of current space systems in order to prepare those of the future, has awarded a study on the use of space technologies for the management of major hazards, to a group led by Alcatel Espace and including participation by SCOT Conseil.
