The IGBP-DIS Land Cover Working Group (LCWG) is putting together a global land cover classification (17 categories) at 1 km resolution. This classification is derived from global AVHRR 1 km data of the period April 1992-March 1993. The so-called 'fast track' product, or IGBP-DIS Global 1 km Land Cover Data Set (version 1), or "DISCover", consists of a classification scheme, a classification methodology, a land cover data base, a validation methodology, a validation data base and a validation data layer.
Version 1 classification for North America is already available.
For South America, Africa and Eurasia, version 1 classifications should
be completed by end-1996. Version 1 releases can be obtained from the following
