Earth observation by satellite : new perspectives for agriculture

CNES (Centre national d'études spatiales), Rhône-Poulenc Agro, Spot Image and Scot Conseil have just signed a memorandum of agreement, covering a periode of three years, for the purpose of assessing the contribution of space techniques to agro-industry.

The agreement involves both setting-up a research and development programme on the introduction of Earth observation data, in particular from Spot satellites, and defining the conditions for commercial implementation and exploitation of these data.

In terms of agreement :

- CNES, which wants to develop the use of Earth observation satellite data, will be able to increase his knowledge of the needs of the agricultural sector, to be used in defining the characteristics of future Spot satellites

- Rhône Poulenc Agro will be investing in new technology for precision agriculture and confirming its intention to provide its customers with efficient decision-making tools. These will enable farmers to optimise input selection and management for sustainable agriculture, which combines both economic and environmental objectives

- Spot-Image, which is the world-wide distributor of Spot satellite imagery, will enrich its range of products designed for integration in agricultural decision-making systems

- Scot-Conseil, which develops Earth observation applications, will intensify its industrial and operational activities in the agro-industry sector.
