The Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)
was established in 1989 with a mission " To provide access to and enhance
the use of information worldwide, advancing understanding of human interactions
in the environment and serving the needs of science and public and private
decision making". In pursuit of its mission, CIESIN operates three
unique data centers: the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC),
the World Data Center A (WDC-A) for Human Interactions in theEnvironment,
and the U.S. Global Change Research Information Office(GCRIO). While
the thematic focus and operating mechanics of each center are unique, they
all share a common function of providing coherent access to a wealth of
distributed data and information resources.
Gridded Population of the World
-Raw Population Counts
The SEDAC is one of eight data centers within the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration's (NASA) Earth Observing System Data and Information
System. SEDAC's mission is to develop and deliver information products
and services that integrate socialand natural science data in ways useful
for decision making. Numerous datasets, data applications and information
resources are available on-line including: Archive of Census Related Products,
China Dimensions Data Collection, Stratospheric Ozone and Human Health,
and Environmental Treaties and Resource Indicators. These and many
more on-line resources are available via the World Wide Web (WWW)
. SEDAC user support is available via phone: (517) 797-2727 or E-mail:
[email protected].
The WDC-A for Human Interactions in the Environment is one of more
than 40 centers comprising the World Data Center System. It is the first
non-solar and non-geophysical WDC to be established by the International
Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), and the first to be considered a distributed
archive. The Center provides access to interdisciplinary data, with
a special focus on population and administrative boundaries. Major data
collections include: Gridded Population of the World, Integrated Assessment
Models of Global Climatic Change, Demographic and Boundary Collections
for China and Mexico, and World Resources 1996-97. This Center is
accessible via the WWW at http://www.ciesin.org/home-page/WDC.html.
User support is available via phone: (517)797-2727 or E-mail: [email protected].
The Global Change Research Information Office provides access to data
and information on global change research, adaptation/mitigation strategies
and technologies, and global change related educational resources.
CIESIN operates this center on behalf of the US Global Change Research
Program (USGCRP) and its participating U.S. Federal Agencies and Organizations.
On-line access is provided to over 50 documents, as well as to a distributed
bibliographic archive containing more than 1500 entries of relevance to
global change research (over 100 entries pertinent to Africa and the Mediterranean
region). In addition, GCRIO processes hundreds of requests forprinted
materials monthly. The on-line resources and a document request form
are accessible via the WWW at http://www.gcrio.org.
GCRIO user support is available via phone: (517)797-2730 or Email: [email protected].
