PROOF program, explicitly takes into consideration the inter-
action between mesoscale, basin-scale and global scale.
These modeling activities benefit from in situ as well as
remote sensing observations that provides initialization and
validation fields for models (figure 6, project OCEVAR, see
colour pages). They also benefit from laboratory experi-
ments that allow the parameterization of key processes.
PROOF, are in line with international programs under the
umbrella of IGBP and/or SCOR. Hence, the PROOF theme 1
relates to the SOLAS (Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere
Study) program. The PROOF theme 2 relays the scientific ori-
entations of the emerging program IMBER (Integrated
Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research). Finally,
theme 3 is in line with the prospective undertaken by PJTT
(Paleo-JGOFS Task Team) which derives from JGOFS and
from the international program IMAGES. It is also one of the
research domain identified by the GEOTRACES project,
recently accepted by the planning committee of SCOR.
