Abstract

This project will endeavour to interpret the abundant fossil record of plants and animals from the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous non-marine formations of Thailand in terms of changing environments and climates. Most of the formations of the Khorat Group of NE Thailand, ranging in age from latest Jurassic to the base of the Late Cretaceous, have yielded plant, invertebrate and vertebrate remains. This succession of floras and faunas documents changes which we plan to link to the evolution of environments and climates. One of the aims of the project is to study the changes that occurred during the Jurassic-Cretaceous transition, which is well represented in the continental domain in Thailand. Another important aspect is that of plant/animal interactions through time during a crucial period which saw the emergence of the angiosperms. The question of the dinosaur-bird transition will also be addressed on the basis of recently discovered embryos. Temperature estimates will be derived from oxygen isotopes in the phosphatic tissues of vertebrates in order to reconstruct changes during a period which seems to have been characterized by marked climate fluctuation, with special emphasis on seasonality. The final aim of the project is to produce a picture of continental environmental and climate changes from the Late Jurassic to the mid-Cretaceous in a tropical area, which can be compared with existing climate models.
