Le projet consiste en une étude multidisciplinaire des accidents climatiques majeurs qui sont intervenus entre 38 et 8 ka B.P. dans l'hémisphère nord. Il s'agit plus particulièrement de six "excursions climatiques" majeures : les quatre derniers événements de Heinrich, le Younger Dryas et l'événement daté de "8200 ans" BP. Grâce à des collaborations entre diverses disciplines, les enregistrements multi-paramétriques de ces événements seront examinés simultanément dans les trois réservoirs : glaces (carottes du Groënland et glaciers alpins), océan (carottes IMAGES), continent (carottes lacustres et dépôts de grottes). Les données sédimentologiques et géochimiques seront confrontées aux enregistrements polliniques et aux données préhistoriques. On tentera de corréler ces événements, d'évaluer leur ubiquité, leur synchronisme, de proposer des hypothèses quant à d'éventuelles influences sur les populations humaines (migrations, changements culturels, etc...). Des signaux précurseurs de ces événements seront aussi recherchés, afin de tenter de produire un outil utile à la prospective climatique. Ce projet se rapporte principalement au volet : "Étude de l'impact climatique des forçages externes et internes" de l'appel d'offre, mais aussi aux volets 3 et 4.
